Score Of Miners Killed By Unknown Gunmen In Zamfara State


No fewer than 40 miners have been killed, while several others sustained serious injuries when they were attacked in Bindi town, in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State by suspected herdsmen.

Eyewitness told Metro that the hoodlums had invaded a mining site Monday afternoon and began to shoot sporadically at the miners.

“They were shooting sporadically. Even those inside the mining pits were not spared too. After the shooting spree, we counted 40 bodies, while several others were injured.

It was gathered that afterwards, the hoodlums who had AK-47 rifles zoomed off on their motorcycles heading towards the forest.

As of the time of filing this report, all the deceased had been buried according to Islamic injunctions.

Reacting to the incident, the police image maker, DSP Shehu Mohammed, remarked that the Police Commissioner had ordered for the redeployment of mobile policemen to condone off the area.

Also reacting to the attack, the state government had condemned the gruesome killing of the miners, describing the act as wicked and a crime against humanity.

In a statement signed by the governor’s spokesman, Ibrahim Dosara, the state governor, Abdulaziz Yari, who was billed to travel to America to monitor the United States presidential election had to cancel the trip when he was told of what happened.

“Governor Yari, who had to cancel his official trip to the United States earlier scheduled for this morning to monitor the US presidential election, is presently discussing the attack with the president and the security agencies in Abuja, with a view to finding lasting solutions to the persistent problem of armed banditry and general insecurity in the state.

A group of Nigerian youngsters sponsored by Lagos State Government and their coordinator, Professor Kolawole Raheem, were Thursday, received by head of unit; Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hannu Heinonen, at Finland. The participants, whose trip was funded by Lagos State Ministry of Education, were chosen based on their outstanding performance in school. The visit, however aims at enabling the youngsters have an experience of how the Finnish society works and to offer them the possibility of bringing positive examples back to Nigeria. The participants were especially interested in matters related to environment and construction, as well as the Finnish social security and education systems. These visits that have already become somewhat of a tradition are envisaged to continue in the coming years.
