Buhari writes Senate: Osinbajo is Acting President

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, told the Senate that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will act on his behalf as President for the 11 days he would be on medical vacation to the United Kingdom, UK. In a letter to the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, President Buhari said he was writing in line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

According to the letter, which was read at plenary yesterday by Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided, the President said he would be away from June 6 to 16.
The letter read: “In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, I wish to inform the distinguished Senate that I will be away on a short medical vacation from June 6 to 16, and while I am away, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, will perform the functions of my office.
“Please, accept, as always assurances of my highest esteemed consideration.”
It would be recalled that President Buhari had, last week, visited the Aso Villa clinic, where he was treated for an ear infection.
The presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, had however, claimed that the President was hale and hearty, thereby casting doubts on the rumours.
However, Adesina made a U-turn last Sunday, and admitted that President Buhari had an ear infection and would, therefore, travel to the United Kingdom for a 10-day medical vacation.
