Journalist, His Wife and Son Die in Gas Explosion in Ebonyi State

National Vice President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), South- South zone, Mr. Eddie Bekom, his wife and son have died in a terrible gas explosion from a neighbor’s cooking gas.

They are survived by three children, one of who is till in critical condition at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA), Ebonyi State.
Bekom was an employee of the Cross River Broadcasting Service, Ikom until his death on Sunday evening.
According to NewTelegraph, Bekom, wife and four children had been receiving treatment at the Plastic Surgery Department of the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA), Ebonyi State, for more than two weeks after their neighbour’s cooking gas exploded.

Bekom’s 10-year-old boy died in the hospital few days after the explosion, while his wife died a week later, leaving him and three children behind.
In a statement signed by the Ebonyi State Chairman of SWAN, Chukwuemeka Opara regretted that after all efforts made to save Bekom’s life went futile
A part of the statement reads,
“In this moment of utmost grief, we commiserate with the entire SWAN family and pray that God gives us all and the entire Bekom family the fortitude to bear these irreparable losses.
“We use this opportunity to thank the Ebonyi state government for pledging to offset the entire bills of treating the Bekom family, the management and staff of FETHA, SWAN members, other journalists among others who through prayers and financial contribution.”

A group of Nigerian youngsters sponsored by Lagos State Government and their coordinator, Professor Kolawole Raheem, were Thursday, received by head of unit; Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hannu Heinonen, at Finland. The participants, whose trip was funded by Lagos State Ministry of Education, were chosen based on their outstanding performance in school. The visit, however aims at enabling the youngsters have an experience of how the Finnish society works and to offer them the possibility of bringing positive examples back to Nigeria. The participants were especially interested in matters related to environment and construction, as well as the Finnish social security and education systems. These visits that have already become somewhat of a tradition are envisaged to continue in the coming years.
